Obama: 'Long War in Iraq' Will Finish by End of 2011
"President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon an end to the Iraq war, declaring that all American troops will leave the country by the end of the year."As promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year. After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over," the president told reporters in the White House Briefing Room after a video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.President Obama said offered assurances that the two leaders agreed on the decision and that the nations will establish a normal relationship and a "strong and enduring partnership" after troops leave.The two nations agreed to the U.S. withdrawal by the end of 2011 during George W. Bush's presidency. President Obama declared the end of the combat mission earlier this year.The Iraq war was one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in American history."
